REN052 Digital era, matter of survival for Kiwi companies Kiwi businesses are having to substantially change how they operate with the rapid arrival of the digital age, a leading New Zealand business expert says. Ian Christie, a former head of Saatchi and Saatchi New Zealand and a member of WPP's global leadership team in the UK, says it’s now a matter of survival now for New Zealand companies and organisations on how they change their modus operandi. “Large or small, every part of all business operations has been touched by digitisation, says Christie, who is now chief executive of the software company Boma, in Auckland. “It’s not just the customer being able to purchase goods and services online, but all through the supply chain, from raw material sourcing to manufacturing, to distribution and sales. No part of business is escaping the digital disruption. “The good news is that this revolution is bringing down costs dramatically in some areas, but on the other side, is Seco boosts in implant machining Seco Tools has introduced the industry’s first product line specifically dedicated to knee implant machining. The new Jabro medical range of solid carbide cutting tools combines different machining strategies such as high-speed machining to shorten part cycle times when machining knee implants by as much as 50%. The tools’ continuous grades and optimised coatings result in exceptional part surfaces that reduce, and often eliminate, the need for polishing or fine finishing operations. These features also promote excellent process stability and long tool life. The Jabro medical range includes nine advanced geometries and 39 tools, most of which are positioned in Jabro Tornado highspeed cutting family. Each geometry is designed for particular applications in the machining of tibial tray and femoral knee implant parts. And because the new dedicated tools excel in the machining of CoCr (cobalt chrome) and Ti6Al4V ISO-S12 parts (3D printed), they maximise machine performance for other medical components such as those for hip replacements and bone plates as well. The latest in what the company describes as the industry-leading product, Mastercam 2018, now offers new 2D/3D and multi-axis milling features, powerful turning and mill-turn enhancements, design and solid modelling improvements, and so much more. Milling advances Stock awareness has been added to select 2D toolpaths which acknowledges the stock and controls the tool motion to avoid any collision with remaining stock. This provides a safer and more optimised tool motion. Finish passes are optimise based on your remaining stock, giving you more efficient and safer tool motion. The workflow for all 3D high speed toolpaths has been streamlined and gives you fine control over exactly where to cut. High speed hybrid toolpaths now offer smoothing controls and deliver a finer finish, requiring less secondary finish work. Expanded turning and mill-turn capabilities If you work with stringy materials such as aluminium or stainless steel, Mastercam’s new chip break control prevents problems by allowing you to set length and time conditions, retract, and dwell
