PROFILE OF SUCCESS BIGGER HAS MEANT BETTER AS BUSINESS BOOMS When Machinery House made the decision to move to new premises at 2 Waiouru Road, Highbrook, Auckland it came at great expense and, as with any decision to expand, some risk. But a little over a year on every post has been made a winner, none more so than for the company’s customers. Space in spades. That’s what Machinery House now can offer to its customers as the line of machines spans aisle-after-aisle, allowing customers to physically engage with the products they are thinking of purchasing. “Every machine is on the shop floor,” says branch manager Miles Donald. Miles explains that Machinery House now has about $5 million worth of machines and product in its vast warehouse too. “But being bigger isn’t the be end and end all. What the new premise has allowed us to do is improve efficiencies too, and that’s a critical component of the business. Every machine is checked and tested before it’s put out on display, so our customer base can be confident that whatever they buy works – we understand that downtime isn’t an option.” The move from their old premises was predicated on the need to cater for their customers’ desire to be able to see everything the company stocked and also to be able to hold greater numbers of stock and spare parts, Miles says. The old premise only allowed about a quarter of the stock to be on show. “Machinery House has experienced growth upon growth for the last five years and now that we’ve settled in here we are truly able to capitalise on that growth and offer our customers and extended and unique level of service,” says Miles. It’s not simply about the sale with Machinery House. It’s about that “next level” of business that Miles describes as entering into a partnership with a growing customer base. “Just selling a machine doesn’t work for us or for our customers,” says Miles. “We have technicians on site, and the reason for that is that we can be confident that we are pitching the right machine for the job to every customer. 24 Profile of Success 2018 If a customer wants to bring in a material they will use, our technicians will run it through the machine. More is on show, and more is being shown, says Miles, with the products the company carrying seemingly increasing on a daily nature. And if they don’t have it, they’ll get it. “It’s totally about the customer. We can get things from Australia promptly and we do a spare parts order weekly." The scale and product offering is indeed massive and impressive, but it’s not until a staff member approaches you that you can taste the passion for tools. “They’re all exceptional and very knowledgeable and continually upskilled to ensure they offer nothing short of the best advice to every single customer,” says Miles. The range that Machinery House offers also has some flagship machines that are equally as impressive. The Swift-Cut CNC plasma cutting table was the talk of the town when shown at EMEX 2016, now it’s next evolution – The Swifty – will no doubt grab the same accolades come showtime next year. The Swifty is a fully portable, smaller version of the Swift-Cut that can sit on the back of the ute and be used directly on site at a job. “We don’t like to stand still – it’s all about continual evolution of products, our services, our staff… if you can do better tomorrow than what you did today then you are on a path to continual improvement and with it, success.” All products are available online too, and that serves a great purpose, but Miles says to fully experience what Machinery House has to offer you should come in store – “decades of experience in all trades”.
