www.foodtechnology.co.nz 23 UP-COMING EVENT P E N I N S U L A FOODIES WANTED Coromandel craft beer brewers, winemakers, eatery managers and artisan food producers and providers have been invited to the region’s inaugural Coromandel Food Forum in November. Organised by the Thames-Coromandel District Council as part of the Coromandel Food Collective initiative, the event will feature invited speakers and time to mingle with other food producers and restaurateurs over homegrown food and drinks. Council communications, marketing and events manager Laurna White says there’s huge value in sharing ideas on common issues that food businesses face, and the event will allow producers to not only talk about challenges but what is working well for them. “We’ll also have council staff, and food and hospitality industry experts on hand to provide advice and guidance on a whole range of issues that will be of interest, including things like health and safety and export opportunities,” White says. The event will also serve as a launch of the 2018 edition of the Coromandel Food Collective’s food trail guide. The collective is a network of niche and artisan food producers on the peninsula, which was supported by the council with the creation and co-ordination of a stand at this year’s Auckland Food Show that featured Thames Valley Bacon, 309 Honey, Chocolates Are Us and Castle Rock Cafe. White says the aim is to raise the profile of the Coromandel as a destination for lovers of artisan food and beverages with a diverse range of products for tastings and sale. “Exhibitors reported that, while definitely worthwhile from a sales point of view, a major benefit was working together with others from the Coromandel under one umbrella, and getting their product into the hands of chefs and buyers. Some of the Coromandel Collective exhibitors from the Food Show will utilise and stock each other’s products as a result of the time spent together at the show.” If you are interested in attending the Food Forum on November 6 from 12 noon to 4pm at the Coromandel’s newest brewer and restaurant Marina Bar and Grill run by Leon Smith at the new Tairua Marina, please email: amber.baker@tcdc.govt.nz.
