CUTTING OUT THE COMPETITION Engineering tools and material supplier grows on the back of quality products and being made of the ‘right stuff’ If you want competitive quotes for tooling, toolsteel or other specialist metals then you need not go any further – CNC Direct is where the engineering industry stops to shop. The company has gone through a sustained period of growth for both arms of its business – CNC Direct supplying trusted brands within CNC machining, saw cutting and accessories (Quaser, Chevalier, FAT-Haco, Takisawa, CHMER EDM, JIH-I and Waytrain) while High Grade Metals has all the materials required for precision engineering including indent metals (aluminium, steel, copper, beryllium copper, titanium), steel (A2,2767, H13, P2, P20) and aluminium (6082, 7075, Formodal 23 and Formodal 30). 40 August 2017 W O R K S H O P Today, a decade on since Mr Thumath established the business, CNC Direct has a massive warehouse/workshop footprint at new premises in Onehunga, but the foundation blocks for this success are still factors driving the business onwards says David Thumath. “We are full-on aluminium and tool service centre – with seven saws and new racking equipment. We have products that other people don’t have especially Formodal which is a cast aluminium plate from Germany that’s machined to a 0.1 tolerance top and bottom, PVC-coated, doesn’t move when machined and is very stable. Stocked from 8mm-200mm. All our materials are sourced from Germany; steel and aluminium. All certified – everything has got a test certificate, and traceable… you can come to us a year later and track exactly, from where that material came from, tests and all,” says Mr Thumath. He says the company aims for a very quick turnaround and that has played a significant aspect in the company’s expansion. “Sure, we get busy, but we make it a priority.” He adds there are some subtle points of difference that CNC has over the competition that in the long run turn out to be very significant for its customer base. “We stock 6082 instead of 6061 in aluminium – it is a more consistent anodising product that has similar strength properties to 6061. We do 7075 in round bar (25-250 dia) and plates (from www.highgrademetals.co.nz | www.cncdirect.co.nz
