LIGHTWEIGHT AND COST-EFFECTIVE PROFILES The motion plastics specialist igus has expanded its drylin W modular system and now also offers linear guides with rails made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic. From vehicle construction to laboratory technology, this metal-free alternative helps users save costs and weight in their overall construction. Glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP), is convincing not only by its very low weight compared to metallic alternatives. The fibre-plastic composite also has a very high media resistance, is non-magnetic and also very cost-effective. In order to expand its extensive drylin W modular system for linear technology, igus has developed a GRP rail on which a plastic carriage is used. “The drylin W profile made of glass fibre is 20% lighter than aluminium and even 70% lighter than steel,” says Stefan Niermann, head of the drylin linear and drive technology division at igus. “At the same time, it is also 50% cheaper than carbon, which means that our GRP linear guide system is an alternative for use in vehicle and aircraft construction as well as for medical devices or measuring systems.” The pairing of GRP and plastic is also suitable for other industries where highly dynamic movements play a BURN LONGER, CUT CLEANER www.engineeringnews.co.nz 47 Introducing American Torch Tip’s next generation of plasma cutting torch consumables. Stop wasting time grinding dross, reaming holes and make fewer change-outs and minimise production downtime. CleanCut’s high-velocity nozzle design reduces turbulence, stabilises and accelerates the plasma arc column. The design based on advanced rocket-engine technology produces a narrower, stable plasma arc. This creates ultra-smooth cuts with less back spatter, dross, unintended bevel and faster piercing times. A series of Tri-cooling fin grooves are machined around the nozzle base; these grooves allow coolant to flow across a greater surface area than competitor nozzles, carrying more heat away from the torch. Designed to work in synergy with CleanCut’s ultimate silver tipped electrodes that have 25% more silver for more efficient cooling and prolong life of all other consumables. Easy plug-and-play changeouts for Hypertherm, Kaliburn and ESAB CNC torches.  Contact for a free trial. Its vast range of fixing and fastening solutions remain a popular choice. The majority of plastic components are made of nylon 6/6 which is tough, durable and corrosion-resistant in normal temperatures. There is also a range of assorted kits available which are handy for prototypes, product design and maintenance. The kits feature selections from washers, plastic spacers, rivets, cable clips, insulating bushes, grommets, screws/nuts, hole plugs and PCB supports. For engineering and assembly there are plenty of nylon screws, nuts, bolts and washers available in metric and imperial sizes. Threaded rod in 1-metre lengths is available in M3- M20 sizes. Multi-sized nylon washers are available as flat, self-retaining and insulating. Quick, convenient fastenings such as snap, ratchet, screw rivets, arrow, keyhole, snap clips, push in fasteners and a new range of push lock rivets just added to the range are available in many sizes. To blank and finish holes through panels, locking/non-locking hole plugs, insulating bushes and grommets will complete the job. For cable management, there are many choices available from stock including cable glands, cable ties, cable clips, twist ties, ‘P’ clips and wire saddles. Screw, clip and selfadhesive parts are all available. role such as robotics where weight advantages of GRP components play great importance. Due to the good media resistance, however, the linear guide can also be used in an environment with aggressive cleaning agents. Like all igus products, it manages completely without external lubrication and is insensitive to dust and dirt. www.treotham.co.nz
