DON’T DROP THE BALL “You wouldn’t want to be the one,” says Mike Ryan, Farra Engineering Machining Division’s manager. He’d been asked by Engineering News what drives him and his staff to succeed and to produce the highest quality standards while continually delivering innovation; something Mike touched on earlier in the conversation. “Farra’s been around since 1863, you wouldn’t want to be the one to drop the ball and let that engineering heritage down. That’s pretty much our ethos, ‘Don’t drop the ball’. The staff here don’t have years or decades of standards to live up to, they’ve got near on two centuries’ worth.” “So, a little bit of fear then?” we ask tongue-in-cheek. “Sure,” Mike laughs. “Success breeds success. Fear of letting that rich history down, all that engineering before us and built what Farra is today… yeah, fear of disrespecting that is a great thing to have. It keeps everyone on their toes. Very proud.” www.engineeringnews.co.nz 13 valuable and that’s the situation we find ourselves in. I consider our people to be one of our greatest strengths; you can have all the flash machinery you like but if you haven’t got a good crew you’re not in good shape. “And we’re in great shape.” And Farra seems to continue to shape itself. It is iconic and it is a true part of Otago history, and through that the staff know they carry heritage on their wide engineering shoulders. “153 years in business and counting, don’t drop the ball. That’s certainly what this team runs with,” says Mike. • Large capacity and technically capable Machineshop. • Supporting field services department. • Heat treatment. • Site machining equipment and solutions. • Supported by Farra, Fabrication, Sheetmetal, Stainless, Engineering Design and Lift Components. www.farra.co.nz South Mach Stand 9 FARRA MACHINING: P: 64 3 477 9235 | M: 021 442 418 | F: +64 3 474 3036 | E: mike.ryan@farra.co.nz
