PA C K A G I N G www.foodtechnology.co.nz 29 New Zealanders involved in the packaging and processing machinery genres are being urged to apply for a 2017 Australian Packaging & Processing Machinery Association scholarship worth more than $9500. Submissions will be opening soon for the 9th annual scholarship programme, which will enable one packaging technologist, designer or engineer the opportunity to complete a Diploma in Packaging Technology at the association’s cost. Diploma in Packaging Technology students are from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines, and are typically experienced practitioners or managers in technical, sales/marketing, QA, purchasing, engineering or design. This is the case for 2016 winner Michael Seaman (pictured above centre), a packaging and process improvement specialist for Integria Healthcare, who judges say has a broad understanding of the applications and implications of packaging, with a passion that has greatly assisted his studies. “The impact of packaging on, and within, business continues to have me hooked,” Seaman says. “Moreover, the opportunities to impact both product and the environment, through the choices made on packaging related matters, reinforces that the packaging arena is for me. Put simply, I love working in the field of packaging, and my desire to continue the journey of learning, and applying those learnings, continues to grow.” Successful graduates are equipping themselves for senior positions within the packaging industry, with the qualification preparing them to take responsibility for packaging operations at any level through the supply chain, Australian of Packaging Institute executive officer Nerida Kelton says. “The qualification is internationally recognised, comprehensive and provides an opportunity to study the principles of packaging, materials and processes.” Submissions close on January 20, 2017. So where do you start? Some things you will need to consider are the face stock, the liner, the adhesive, silicon, release, die-cutting, high build varnish, lamination, reverse print….and that’s just for a self-adhesive label! Or maybe you need a shrink sleeve, ROSO, thermal transfer, direct thermal, cut and stack, poly-wrap or maybe in-mould labels? You might need to consider UV or solvent flexo printing, off-set print, gravure printing, letterpress printing, digital printing. And these are just the basics…. Confused yet? Overwhelmed? Where do you start? Start by calling experts at Labelmakers - Australasia’s largest vertically integrated label manufacturer.
