AT MY son’s recent birthday party, he enjoyed his special day with a homemade chocolate cake. As I watched him blow out the candles, I wondered at whether his future children will be able to do the same in the wake of global climate change. We know already that chocolate and wheat will be harder to grow and way more expensive as temperatures change and rainfall patterns alter towards 2050. And you may as well kiss the idea of a banana cake goodbye, with the fruit crops being ravaged by Sigatoka disease. It got me thinking about what kinds of changes will take place in food manufacturing as the earth warms up. What will New Zealand look like, how will livestock cope with higher temperatures, where will the droughts be, how will our exports thrive? Enlisting the help of global thinktank Singapore-based Sciex, we asked the burning question… are New Zealand’s food and beverage industries ready to cope? The answer is relieving. Attached to that topic are articles from two Kiwis who are looking ahead to changing times and the future of food and beverage production. Professor Jacqueline Rowarth has been appointed the inaugural chief scientist for the Environmental Protection Authority, and is promising plain explanations for rules, regulations and decisions dominating the industry. Fonterra chief science and food technology officer Jeremy Hill takes a look at what pharma foods might mean for dairy and the way we eat in the future. Don’t forget a look at the back sections of this month’s issue. Is Wanaka now New Zealand’s brewing capital? What exactly is the Budburst Festival? Why has an Auckland beer company been forced to change its branding? Taranaki talks about its burgeoning food and beverage industries, and Agcarm’s Mark Ross explains why our food is safe. This month’s issue is, of course, a Food- Tech PackTech 2016 special, packed with exhibitor profiles as we lead up to the big event. And congratulations to the finalists (listed below) of the NZ Food Awards. Winners will be announced on October 13.
