REGIONAL UPDATE TWIN COAST DISCOVERY PROJECT HAS NORTHLAND’S FOOD AND WINE PRODUCERS EXCITED Northland’s passionate food and wine producers will capitalise on the increased exposure that comes as the revamp of the Twin Coast Discovery route gathers momentum towards 2020. The established circular touring route which starts and finishes in Auckland and takes in popular attractions throughout the top of the North Island, is breaking deeper ground. Revealing some of the North’s previously ‘best kept secrets’, the route revamp will promote more off-the-beaten-track experiences and attractions to entice visitors into extending their Northland holidays to enjoy more of what is on offer. 34 JUNE 2016 The $1.5 million dollar project is a headline in the Tai Tokerau Northland Economic Action Plan and is ambitious yet key to growing the Northland tourism industry. It will offer compelling ‘off the beaten track’ road journeys, as well as in-depth digital interpretations of sites on the route, points of interest and themes along the way. One of the unique long-term features will be the ‘Pou Trail’, designed as a fundamental element of an authentic Tai Tokerau/Northland visitor experience. Existing Pou in a number of settings from civic spaces to public beaches will be integrated with new Pou created, and together will tell visitors the stories of mana whenua throughout Tai Tokerau/ Northland. Expected to generate 200 new jobs and inject an extra $20 million in regional GDP within five years, the Twin Coast Route – first put in place in 1999 – has Northland’s enthusiastic food and wine producers
