When you think of sheep’s wool, it’s usually in the context of keeping something warm. But not anymore. A British-based company has developed a wool product that keeps perishable food cool…and its unique product is causing quite a stir in food markets. Woolcool has been developed by packing designer Angela Morris over the past seven years, after the National Trust commissioned her to help its tenant farmers with an environmentally friendly way of keeping their home deliveries chilled during transit. What she found was that sheep wool is a smart fibre with hygroscopic properties that absorb and release moisture from the air to create consistent temperatures, meaning it can maintain chilled contents below 5 degrees celcius for at least 24 hours. It is a sustainable alternative to man-made polymers, is the only range of sheep wool insulation packaging available on a commercial scale, and will be targeted at the entire perishable food sector including national grocery retailers. “I have been able to excite people and build a business around a material that hasn’t been utilised for this application before. It has been a real journey, and I’m proud of what Woolcool has become and what it stands for,” she says. MOJU, a cold-pressed juice brand targeting health-conscious consumers and using more nutrient-rich vegetables, is using Woolcool for its products, which are available around the world, including at Harrods London. www.woolcool.com At the end of its useful life as packaging, the insulation liners or felted wool can be re-used for a variety of purposes.
