In an effort to reduce drive belt issues Gates has developed a practical preventive maintenance training course designed to improve productivity and reduce downtime. “Our preventive maintenance training will assist you to achieve the best performance from your belt drives and ensure downtime and maintenance are minimised,” says Phil Aitken, product application engineer, Gates Australia. “The most common causes of poor belt life are poor maintenance and improper installation. The course aims to ensure that these causes are illustrated to provide trouble free drives and increase uptime.” The course covers a wide range topics including belt identification, belt construction, trouble shooting belt drive problems, pulley and belt inspection, guard maintenance, pulley installation and alignment, belt tensioning techniques, re-tension periods as well as training on the use of tension and laser alignment tools. Courses run for approximately four hours and numbers are capped at 12 participants. “Feedback from participants has been extremely positive, with many commenting that they have specific take-aways that they can apply to their facility,” Mr Aitken says. Of course optimum belt drive performance is not achieved using guesswork, installers need the right tools for the job. Gates most popular maintenance tool kit, the GIBMAINT-3, allows any belt drive to be accurately installed and maintained. “The GIBMAINT-3 is the most advanced belt drive installation and maintenance kit available,” said Phil. “It includes our premium 508C Sonic tension meter and EZ Align Green laser alignment tool, in addition to a selection of Belt Wear Gauges that allow for quick and easy V-belt pulley inspections.” To ensure optimum performance, regular checks are essential, the Gates kit includes aluminum tension plates that can be installed on the drive or guard to ensure belt details and tensioning data are always on hand. In addition, three other kit are available with slightly different components included to suit individual requirements and budgets. The company also offers engineering technical services, where our field team members are available to work with you on-site to provide solutions for any new drives or belt drive problems you are currently experiencing.
