N E W S WHEELS IN MOTION FOR SPACE LAUNCHES FROM NZ The Government is putting in place a new regulatory regime to enable safe, secure and responsible space launches from New Zealand, economic development minister Steven Joyce says. “New Zealand is rapidly building a more diversified hi-tech economy, and one of the companies at the very leading edge of technology is our own home-grown start-up, Rocket Lab,” Mr Joyce says. “The company and its parent company, Rocket Lab USA, are almost ready to start launching rockets commercially, and we need to introduce a regulatory framework so they and others that come after them can operate from New Zealand.” NEW ZEALAND POST’S NEW ELECTRIC 7 VEHICLES ARRIVE The first shipment of New Zealand Post’s 500 new electric delivery vehicles has landed in Auckland for a nationwide rollout that starts later this year. 50 vehicles from Norwegian manufacturers Paxster AS have arrived so far for parcel and mail delivery starting on Auckland’s North Shore. “Within the next two years we plan to have 500 Paxsters in operation, which we believe will be the largest fleet of road legal, fully electric vehicles in New Zealand,” says acting chief operating officer, Mark Stewart. SIEMENS MAKES PLM SIMPLE Siemens’ product lifecycle management (PLM) business has launched its new Simcenter portfolio, a robust suite of simulation software and test solutions that help companies address the modern engineering challenges of today’s complex products. Simcenter combines simulation and physical testing with intelligent reporting and data analytics to help produce digital twins that more accurately predict product performance throughout all stages of the product development process. As a result, engineering organisations can confidently deliver innovations faster and with less cost. Within this portfolio, Siemens is also introducing Simcenter 3D, a next generation 3D CAE solution built on the Siemens’ NX software platform and combining the capabilities of several solutions to cover a wide range of simulation disciplines and industry applications. HEALTH AND SAFETY MADE SIMPLE With the changes to the Health & Safety at Work Act (HSAW) two half day sessions are now available through Maintenance Transformations Limited to simplify health and safety and job safety analysis (JSA) on July 19 in Auckland. The first covers statutory involvement, 2016 legislation and regulations, effective health and safety systems, hazards, events and procedures and behavioural factors in health and safety management. The JSA course will look at the effect of the latest legislation, effective health and safety systems, procedures, permits and JSA’s, risk in the business, a practical JSA workshop session and managing JSA in the long term. http://tinyurl.com/zsm6vkm Scholarships open doors into mechanical engineering Melissa Kupa, left, Bachelor of Engineering Technology student at WelTec, Melissa Kupa has her sights set firmly on becoming a mechanical engineer, thanks to a Toloa scholarship from the Ministry for Pacific Peoples.  Ms Kupa says she decided to study engineering because she wants to be involved in the design, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems with her long term goal being to join the New Zealand Navy. “To be able to work on boats and travel the world sounded challenging and exciting,” she says. Last year Ms Kupa was a student at Sacred Heart College in Lower Hutt and was recognised for her leadership of Pasifika students.  She achieved well academically gaining NCEA level 3 with merit endorsements in core engineering related subjects - calculus, sciences and maths.  With a dad who is an electrician and wider family support for her decision to become an engineer, Ms Kupa applied for a Toloa scholarship through the Ministry for Pacific Peoples last year. The Toloa scholarship aims to encourage young Pasifica people to pick up study in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths).  Ms Kupa, who is Tokelauan, was awarded the scholarship and will receive financial support throughout her degree studies at WelTec.  “I want to be a role model for Pasifika girls and to let them and their families know that engineering is a great profession with lots of opportunities,” says Ms Kupa. Acting chief executive of the Ministry for Pacific Peoples Malo Ah-You says, “With the government’s new investment in STEM through the Toloa scholarships ($1.2 million over four years) we see many more opportunities for our Pacific young people  to participate in STEM subjects and have better choices for a better life.” And there is no doubt Ms Kupa will be a trail blazer.  According to the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) women make up only 13% of engineers in New Zealand and 7% of chartered professional engineers. This is despite first-rate job opportunities and earnings potential.  Ms Kupa is studying the Bachelor of Engineering Technology at the Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) – a three year degree recognised internationally by the Sydney Accord.  The next intake for the degree is in mid-July. http://tinyurl.com/govm877 QR Code ABOUT QR CODES QR Code (Quick Response Code) is a type of matrix barcode used to efficently store data.
