MESNZ members mix it with Marley Marley New Zealand’s products are everywhere in New Zealand, but have you ever spared a thought for how those Marley rainwater and plumbing products are produced and maintained? A group of enthusiastic engineers were on hand to find out exactly how when MESNZ held its June Kaeser Compressors network Evening at Marley Products in Manurewa. Marley is part of the Aliaxis group of privately owned business based in Belgium and active around the world. It employs 15,000 staff across 40 countries and is made up of 100 companies worldwide. Marley has grown to become one of New Zealand’s largest manufactures in the plastic industry. Involved with the extruded and injection moulded products covering rainwater, plumbing and civil supplies, drainage grates, rural and conduiting. The 30-plus engineering and MESNZ members enjoyed the hospitality of Bruce Gee and his team who provided an excellent insight into the operation and methods of their production. Each of the six groups were given an in-depth tour of the plant and maintenance workshop facilities during which they were able to witness the production of spouting systems, cable ducting, plumbing and water supply products. The Maintenance Engineering Society is active across New Zealand, providing opportunities for maintenance engineers and manufacturing operations to network and share innovations and experiences; both at a national level at their annual conference or at these regional events. Network Evenings are planned for Auckland, Waikato, New Plymouth, Christchurch Timaru and Dunedin. Details can be found on the MESNZ website at http://www.mesnz.org.nz/activities/ network-evenings/ . The 2016 SKF National Maintenance Engineering Conference will be held at Hamilton in November 9,10. BREXIT VOTE: MORE WORK NOW NEEDED ON TRADE DEALS The new post-Brexit landscape will require more work by New Zealand trade negotiators, says ExportNZ. Executive director Catherine Beard says the vote for Britain to leave the EU will have an impact on New Zealand’s trade arrangements, if new trade deals will need to be struck between the EU and Britain. “For example, New Zealand meat exports to the EU and UK are linked, and those deals may need to be unpicked and renegotiated. Unfortunately, this will create uncertainty. “Our goods exports to Europe are already highly tariffed and New Zealand exporters are hopeful of changing this with a NZ-EU free trade agreement as soon as possible. Britain’s exit from the EU could slow this process down. “Services exports to the UK will also be affected. British tourists make up a large proportion of all tourists to New Zealand. If Brexit results in to the pound dropping lower, higher interest rates and lower growth in the UK, we may expect to see fewer UK tourists coming here. “However the Brexit vote must be seen in the context of the larger moves in exports over recent years - New Zealand is increasingly trading with Asia and Australia rather than the EU and Britain. “Thirteen percent of our food exports go to Europe while 50 percent go to Asia. “New Zealand’s larger export trend is from feeding the West to feeding the East, and this is likely to continue.” 9:15am – 7:15pm Light refreshments served during the evening Spot prizes to be won during the day.
