H I - T E C H 3D And we weren’t disappointed. Joseph Cockroft had just returned from a business trip overseas, and the fruits of his labour had landed on the doorstep just in time to be met by the enthusiastic EN entourage. It was like Christmas for Joseph and the rest of the Hamilton-based team of Professional Cad Systems Limited, as the Creaform 3D MetraScan came out of packaging. The largely family-run company has been about for a while and offers many services including 3D scanning, reverse engineering, 3D inspection, 3D modelling, 3D rendering, iVisit interactive walkthroughs, 3D animations and much more, but you got the feeling that the arrival of the MetraScan heralded a new era in company evolution. Officially called an optical CMM 3D scanner, the MetraScan 3D provides the most flexible portable 3D measurement solution engineered for shop floor conditions. The box opened, Joseph’s eyes widening at the product that looks like something out of a Steven Spielberg movie set, I’d imagine. It glistened, and more eyes widened. “Unexpected costs, production and part approval delays from non-conformities are no longer an issue when using Creaform’s portable optical CMM 3D scanner,” explains Joseph. He says that the system is an ideal tool for reverse engineering and dimensional inspection of production tools, jigs, assemblies, sub-assemblies or final products ranging from one to 3.5  metres with a volumetric accuracy of up to  0.064mm (metrology-grade measures up to 0.03mm and resolution up to 0.05mm). Optical reflectors are used to create a reference system that is ‘locked’ to the part, so users can move the object any way they want during the measurement process. “Optical metrology provides measurement accuracy that is insensitive to the instabilities of the environment... it’s ideal for the shopfloor with no METRASCAN: A GENERATIONAL LEAP IN scanning When Engineering News ventured south beyond the Bombay Hills we knew we were in for a treat. We’d been given word that a Hamilton-based company had a really, really cool product on its books and we just had to go and see what all the fuss was about. 16 June 2016
