New Zealand medical device manufacturer Rex Bionics has announced two major international milestones on the day Prime Minister John Key visited the company’s North Shore R&D and manufacturing facility. The company has agreed the terms of a Materiel Transfer Agreement with the United States Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. The agreement is the prologue to a programme of design modifications to the REX robotic mobility aid that will allow its use for early ambulation of patients with lower limb loss. And a UK man who battled back from life-threatening injuries following a motor vehicle accident has become the first recipient in the world of a personal injury settlement for purchase of a REX P robotic walking device, which will enable him to stand and walk. Mr Key and Foreign Minister Murray Mc- Cully toured Rex Bionic’s Rosedale facility and saw the progress Rex has made since Mr Key attended the launch of the first generation REX in 2010. The technology has been refined to meet market requirements and improve the experience of users. Rex Bionics now has two devices, one for use in rehabilitation (REX) and another for use at home (REX P). The factory has been expanded to ensure supply can meet demand for medium term forecast, and is compliant with international medical device regulations, such as Good Manufacturing Practice, ISO 13485 and ISO 9001. Key visits as terms are agreed for Rex Bionics AGREEMENT WITH US ARMY Rex Bionics’ agreement with the US army has three main components: • Modification of REX to accommodate patients with lower limb loss; • Cooperation with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland; and • Potential for “Broad Applicability across the Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration”. 27th VANZConference2016 & Awareness Day Queenstown, NZ - May 10-12, 2016 Learn more & register at vanz.org.nz HM117
