THE INSTALLATION WAS COMPLETED AS FOLLOWS: Tuesday 1st December: Container arrives Lyttleton port Thursday 3rd December: Container is delivered to install site and NZ Duct+Flex install team visit late in day for preinstall meeting Friday 8am: NZDuct+Flex team start to unload container. 12am: Factory production ceases as normal and removal of old system commences moments later Saturday 9am: Crane arrives and lifts old bag house to rear of site. 11am: New JKF Filtration unit is lifted from its transport cradle Sunday 4pm: NZ Duct+Flex team leave having installed the new filtration units, with 60 filter socks, fan, pre-separation cyclone and all connecting ducting. The fully automatic PowerPulse cleaning system is connected and all power is controlled by the supplied Variable Speed Drive which is being connected by the in-house electricians. “This new system has unique features not found on any other Filtration manufacturer’s products,” explains Geoff Ebdon, general manager at NZ Duct+Flex. Special features include: A. The filter unit only cleans itself when it senses the socks need to be cleaned, instead of the usual blast of a row of 10 socks every 30 seconds or so. This saves up to 60-70% of compressed air usage B. The filter unit cleans every single sock individually instead of a whole row at a time. This means that in a 60 sock unit only 1.6 percent of the filter system is not operating at full potential for around half a second. So 98.5 percent of filter ability is maintained at all times even when the filter is cleaning itself. This is also unique in the market. C. When the socks are cleaned a fully automated sensor measures the air flow though the filter bag before the bag is pulsed. This is because the PowerPulse cleaning system uniquely in the world can measure how dirty the sock is and select a compresed air pulse of between 1.5 and 5 bar. Every other pulse filter available can only pulse at one pressure – normally around 5 bar. This has two advantages: Even less compressed air usage Optimal, gentle cleaning of the filer socks which results in less wear and tear, and less need to replace damaged or worn out socks over time. These features combined, the above features save somewhere around 60 to 90 percent of compresed air usage against traditional old technology systems. Safety Dust is explosive and while it’s not a regularly reported incident, there are more dust explosions than people imagine. Anecdotal evidence points to one or two a month in New Zealand. Most are small volume systems and only minor damage occurs to surrounding building structures and/or plant machinery. However, injuries to staff do occur occasionally, and a responsible company will ensure the possibility of harm to employees is minimised. Any dust extraction company can fit explosion vent panels to their filters which allow the blast of a dust explosion to escape instead of blowing the units to bits, as occurred in NZ in December. However, this still results in a ball of flame extending many tens or hundreds of metres from the filter unit, devastating for anyone in front of it. The filter units fitted at the above installation and in all their NZ plants, are fitted with a patented explosion release system called VFV: Vertical Force Venting. This contains the dust and flame of an explosion inside the filter, allowing only the pressure wave to leave from the roof of the unit. No flame, secondary damage and no harm to staff (unless they are sat on top of the filter at the time which is unlikely). This safer VFV system to protect you, and your employees, is provided by NZ Duct+Flex at no additional cost. The world’s most energy efficient, safest dust extraction systems installed in a weekend.
