ALLIED INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING As Allied Industrial Engineering (AIE) – a heavy mechanical engineering service company – grows into its 23rd year in business, the determination within the team to be one of New Zealand’s leading engineering workshops, servicing heavy industry, remains unchanged. With its customers in mind and years of experience in rotating equipment, the company – which specialises in component manufacture and maintenance and re-engineering services such as machining, balancing, fabrication, fitting, design, draughting and project management - has continued to push its own boundaries. This is evident in the company launching Allied Technical Services (ATS), which offers condition monitoring, laser alignment and onsite balancing to the industry at large. With the launch of ATS, AIE continues to be the one-stop shop for all large rotating equipment and precision machinery. www.engineeringnews.co.nz 29 ARANZ GEO ARANZ Geo was founded to leverage the fast radial basis function (RBF) capability developed by Christchurch mathematicians and applied to 3D scanners in the movie and medical industries. This followed an astute geologist recognising that the technology could also be applied to geological modelling. As a result, Leapfrog was created. Initially focused on mining exploration, Leapfrog is now increasingly being used in other areas of mining operation as well as in engineering applications where geotechnical modelling and understanding is required. Leapfrog has been a paradigm shift for geological modelling, enabling large data sets to be used to model often complex geology in a fraction of the AIE’s team that recently completed the first geothermal steam turbine in NZ time of traditional explicit modelling techniques. The key benefit is the speed of modelling, providing significant cost savings in an intuitive and user-friendly interface and dramatically enhancing decision-making. Since Leapfrog’s launch, implicit modelling has become the industry norm, with many traditional modelling providers seeking to emulate the power of implicit modelling. ARANZ Geo continues to add innovative functionality and complementary products that further enhance the way geologists work, no matter the industry they apply their skills, and supports data interpretation and visualisation in geological modelling. www.aranzgeo.com ARANZ MEDICAL Christchurch-based ARANZ Medical is known is known for its 3D scanning solutions that support evidence-based skin assessment. The company has effectively set the standard for accurate wound assessment and portable 3D scanning of organic surfaces. Recently it was named as winner of the ‘Bayer Supreme Innovator of the Year’ in the 2016 New Zealand Innovators Awards. It was also named as one of ‘ten hot emerging companies’ in the TIN100 report. This follows international success earlier in the year when the company won the 2016 Private Sector Excellence Award from the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) in Brazil. The company’s two key innovations are Silhouette, an FDA-approved advanced wound surveillance system which supports precise and productive wound management in clinical practice and research; and FastSCAN, a 3D scanning system which is used primarily for the precise fitting of orthotics and prosthetics. Its products enable healthcare organisations to gather accurate and consistent information, integrated with health information systems, from the patient. Demand for the company’s solutions is growing due to the increased prevalence of diseases like diabetes and an ageing popluation as well as the growth in telehealth and more more accountable healthcare. Its customers include Kaiser Permanente, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Smith and Nephew in the US and NHS in the UK. BEST OF THE BEST
